My Mission
Life is about the evolution of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our selves as individuals and in the context of a larger community. In my work as a massage therapist and in my currently evolving work as a fellow human being and psychotherapist, I recognize a key aspect of this process is our often conflicting needs for independence and connection.
In becoming a graduate of the Hakomi Institute, I have learned about the importance of compassion, connection, and support in healing our internal conflicts. More importantly, I have developed a strongly held belief in the body’s innate instinct to heal, especially in the presence of a safe other. In my work as a massage therapist and now as a psychotherapist, I view myself as facilitating my clients in their own growth and healing. In an atmosphere of safety and authenticity, my clients have the opportunity to practice new ways of being in the world and within themselves.
About Hakomi
Hakomi is referred to as a body-centered psychotherapy technique and is based on five principles: holism, unity, mindfulness, organicity, and nonviolence. What this means for you is that, as a student of the Hakomi method, I have been trained to always respect your needs, perspectives, and unique gifts. I will also value the relationship we develop as part of a reverent process which in itself is an aspect of your evolution and connection to a much larger purpose
While Hakomi is body-centered, we will do some talking. However, we will also use such things as brief meditations, or mindfulness, to help slow down the “mental chatter” which is so often a part of the human experience. When our minds are quieter, we are better able to pay attention to our truest needs and longings, which is ultimately our body’s wisdom providing the pieces we need to heal.
As a psychotherapist utilizing a body-centered focus, I will also often call attention to observable physical changes to assist you in paying attention to learning about your body’s messages and holding patterns. At times – and only with your permission and absolute comfort – I may use some touch, physical holding, or help you to find ways to provide similar support for yourself.
My Journey
Like many of us, life for me has been a journey of many unexpected surprises. During my early years as a court stenographer, I spent years in evening classes at the University of Pittsburgh. With no clear goal except my appreciation of education, I attained my Bachelors Degree in writing and psychology.
After the birth of my three daughters and caring for my terminally ill father, I retrained to be a massage therapist. Working more intimately with people, I came to realize that it was not just the physical aspects of my clients’ beings that needed contact and healing, but also the mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. This led me to study Hakomi.
To broaden the academic aspects of my learning, I began a Masters Degree program in community counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, from which I will graduate in May, 2008, following an internship at Mercy Behavioral Health.
In addition, I bring years of community service as a Girl Scout leader, involved parent and PTA member, elementary science fair coordinator, and more recently a volunteer for Crisis Center North confronting issues of domestic violence.
Please feel free to call me if you have further questions about Hakomi generally or are interested in experiencing a session.
